A stunning large reverse intaglio coaching crystal brooch of a head study of a Cocker Spaniel. Mother of pearl backed and fascinatingly set in a 14 carat gold frame depicting the dog’s collar. The crystal was most likely carved by Ernest.M. Pradier (English 1881-1967), but American set. American, circa 1930. Reverse intaglio crystals are commonly and erroneously often called Essex Crystals.

3 ) Griffon Bruxellois, Belgium, reverse intaglio 18 carat gold set crystal brooch
A beautiful large reverse intaglio coaching crystal brooch of a head study of a Griffon Bruxellois. The pampered pet wears a blue silk bow, and it’s collar is adorned with three gold bells. Mother of pearl backed and set in an 18 carat gold ‘Gordion Knot’ style frame. The crystal was most likely carved by a member of the Pradier family, prominent carvers in Belgium at that time. Belgium, circa 1890.

4 ) Pair of 18 carat gold reverse intaglio Greyhound crystal cufflinks
A pair of 18 carat gold mother of pearl backed reverse intaglio Greyhound crystal cufflinks. Each cufflink carved with a different image of the Greyhound in coursing motion. The idea clearly derived from Eadweard Muybridge’s study of the Greyhound’s gait, conducted as part of his very famous study of various animals in motion, ca. 1878–1879. Muybridge’s work changed how artists painted the likes of Greyhounds and horses in motion. Very unusual crystals, clearly commissioned by a very proud owner. Marked to the bar and ring “18ct”, with further indecipherable poinçon marks. Complete with original gilt tooled leather box. French, circa 1885

A mid 20th century 9 carat gold reverse intaglio square mother of pearl backed crystal of a Cocker Spaniel pendant by Ernest.M. Pradier (English 1881-1967). Privately commissioned from Pradier as the ‘crystal’ 15th wedding anniversary present from Reginald Arthur Nelsey to his wife Flora Lilian Nelsey (nee Seymour) in 1948. The Pradier family originated in Belgium and were perhaps the most skilled exponents of this art supplying fashionable jewellery across the world. Reverse intaglio crystals are commonly and erroneously often called Essex Crystals. English, 1948.

A gold mounted reverse intaglio crystal of the Bulldog from Philip Reinagle RA (1749-1833) 1790 painting. Philip Reinagle's painting was later published in Taplin’s “Sportsman's Cabinet” of 1803. The crystal in rope and petal gold mount. In the celebrated “The Practical Book of the Dog” by Edward C Ash, published in 1931, he interestingly writes “Note the resemblance to the French Bulldog of to-day”. English, circa 1880
