The image was famously published in print form. Interestingly the French animal painter Jules Gustave Leroy (1856-1921), painted a version of the picture with the title "The Christmas Present". Austrian, circa 1890. Another French published title was “TOUTE UNE NICHEE”.

Signed in pencil bottom left “Frank Paton”. Published 1899 by E. E. Leggatt, London, as part of the series of Christmas Cards publish from 1880 to 1909. An example exists in the collection of the British Museum following E. E. Leggatt 1919 donation of a full set of the Christmas series to the museum.

A owl stamped '75', being the French import poincon gold standard for 18 carat and the pin similarly stamped with an owl and '75'.
