Bailey, John William - England (1831 - 1914)

John William Bailey was born in London, the son of a tanner. He received his early education at Stratford-on-Avon, and later received artistic training under William Essex (English 1784-1869).

Like Essex, he worked mostly in enamel and is known most for his portraits of dogs and other animals. He exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy, the Society of British Artists, and the Royal Society of Miniature Painters, Sculptors and Gravers, from 1859 through 1889.
