Afghan Hound “Shiba of Chaman†by Thomas Frederick Daws RA (1878-1956) Oil on canvas of the gold Afghan Hound, “Shiba of Chaman†by Thomas Frederick Daws RA (English, 1878-1956). Shibar was born 13th March 1938 (Westmill Bayezid Ansari x Safiya), registered KCSB 619W and breed by the Afghan fancier and owner of the famous Chaman Kennels, Mrs Molly Sharpe, then subsequently owned by Mrs F C (Peggy) Riley. Signed “FT Daws†and dated 45â€, and titled “Shiba of Charman†English circa 1945.
Chaman Afghan Hound Kennel was founded in 1935 by Mrs Molly Sharpe. Her Chaman Afghans are known the world over, USA, Canada, Australia, Scandinavia etc. Mrs Sharpe owned and bred Afghans before, during and after the second world war and she bred Afghans into the 1970's. At the first post war Championship show over 50 percent of winners had Chaman blood, 32 percent were pure Chaman and all the bitch classes were won by Chaman bitches, evidence of the significance of this Kennel.

Frederick Daws famously painted some of the Afghan greats, including “Ch. West Mil Omar of Prides Hill, Ch. Badshah of Ainsdart, Int. Ch. Sirdar of Ghazni, and Ch. Azri Havid of Ghazniâ€, this painting currently resides in the American Kennel Club collect a gift of Kay Finch. See “A Breed Apart†by William Secord page 235.. Then another of Ch. Sirdar of Ghazni, in 1927, sometimes referred to as the "father" of today’s Afghan breed, then the famous Zardin painted in 1909, the first Afghan brought to England.
