An oil on canvas of head studies of four Scottish Deerhounds by Miss Edith M Ashford (American, 19th/20th). To the reverse three ink written labels. “ “Four Scottish Lasses” by Edith M Ashford ??? House“ “Scotch Lasses” E M Ashford Marjorie” , named “Marjorie???, Mona, Bana, ???" and another with remnants of address “West Hayley West Stourbridge”. Possibly the dogs from Mr. H. P. Parker’s Stourbridge kennels. In 1985 a painting titled “Trio of Wolfhounds” by E M Ashford was sold at Sotheby’s London for £1,800. It would seem Miss Ashford was a fancier of the breed. English, circa 1900.
Ashford came to England, met with Hubert von Herkomer and studied under him at the Bushey School of Art.
