"The Lady and Spaniels" King Charles Cavaliers by Thomas Landseer ARA (English, 1795-1880) after Sir Edwin Landseer RA (English, 1802-1873) "The Lady and Spaniels", King Charles Cavaliers mixed media mezzotint by Thomas Landseer ARA (English, 1795-1880) after Sir Edwin Landseer RA (English, 1802-1873) Published in 1842 by Thomas McLean of London, and Goupil, Vibert & Co. of Paris. Thomas McLean of London published an earlier edition in 1841. It is a portrait of Miss Ellen Power, niece of Lady Blessington, lying on a pillow, head in profile to left, reading a letter, surrounded by three puppies, a jewellery cushion on a table beside her. Miss Power holds a paper on which is written some verses signed "Carolus R"
The original picture by Sir Edwin Landseer RA was painted for Robert Vernon, Esq., and presented to His Majesty The King of the Belgians by H.R.H. Prince Consort.
Titled bottom right "The Lady and Spaniels" lettered bottom left, "Painted by E Landseer R.A.", bottom right "Engraved by T. Landseer" and centre “London, Published June 21st. 1842, by Thomas McLean, 26, Haymarket & Goupil & Vibert, Paris".
There is an example of this 1842 edition signed by Thomas Landseer in the Royal Collection.
