Oil on canvas of The Cavalier's Hat / Cavalier's Pets by Lucy S Lyon (English, exh. 1994-1901) after Sir Edwin Landseer RA (1802-1873) A pair of King Charles Cavalier Spaniels recumbent on a table besides a plumed hat. Signed and dated to the reverse L S Lyon 1880
The little dogs lie side by side on a table. The Blenheim has his paws over the edge, resting his nose comfortably upon them. The King Charles nestles upon the brim of a high-crowned hat ornamented with a long ostrich plume drooping over the brim. Such a hat was worn among the Cavaliers or king's party in the reign of Charles I.; hence the title of the Cavalier's Pets.
English, circa 1880
The oil is clearly inspired by Sir Edwin Landseer RA, (1802-1873) earlier, 1845 Royal Academy exhibit of the King Charles Spaniels (also known as "The Cavalier's Hat" / "The Cavalier's Pets"). Images are available for public use with an acknowledgement to www.hamsheregallery.com
