Oil of the Skye Terrier "Islay" an early Yorkshire Terrier type attributed to Thomas William Earl (English, fl. 1836-1885), after Sir Edwin Landseer RA, (English, 1802-1873) An oil on board of a Skye attributed to Thomas William Earl (English, fl. 1836-1885), after Sir Edwin Landseer's RA, (1802-1873) 1840 oil of "Islay", Queen Victoria's favourite Skye.
The frame bears plaque Thomas Earl fl 1836-1885â€. The reverse bears BADA gallery label Mandell's Gallery Fine Art Dealers Elm Hill, Norwich, NR3 1HN together with gallery’s stock label. The pampered pet wearing blue silk ribbon recumbent in anticipated posture. On Islay's death the Queen wrote "my faithful companion of more than 5 years .... always with me, & ... a great darling". English, circa 1870.
