A coaching oil on canvas of the "London to Salisbury" and "Moses Pickwick's" carriages "Passing Stonehenge" by John Charles Maggs (English, 1819-1896)

A wonderful and historic Royal Mail coaching oil on canvas of the "London to Salisbury" coach driving in the opposite direction and Moses Pickwick's coach both "Passing Stonehenge" by John Charles Maggs (English, 1819-1896). The Royal Mail bearing signage "Salisbury London" coach wearing the correct Royal Mail livery, black with red door and lower panels, and Post Office red wheels. The "Mosses Pickwick" coach bearing signed "Pickwick Bath". Moses Pickwick, a coachman who was born in Pickwick, lived in Corsham at the "Hare and Hounds" inn, and ran coaches between Bath and London. (Corsham was the inspiration for Charles Dickens' novel The Pickwick Papers. It is said Dickens borrowed Mosses Pickman's name for his novel Pickwick Papers). Signed and dated bottom left "J. C Maggs /95". The reverse bears gallery label for "Daniel Rees Fine Art Dealer Jackson Michigan", and a further "14. X.26" dated stock label J.C Maggs , 19th Century, English School, titled "Passing Stonehenge". English 1895. Provenance Daniel Rees "Fine Art Dealer" Jackson Michigan.
