Oil of a Griffon Bruxellois by Édouard Paul Merite (German / French (1867 – 1941) An oil on board of a seated Griffon Bruxellois by Édouard Paul Mérite (German / French (1867 – 1941). Signed bottom right “E MÉRITEâ€. French, circa 1900. The dog is believed to be the artist’s Griffon ‘Ludo’. Ludo is obviously cropped, then Belge, and the head points and structure are the same as Mérite’s Griffon. Mary Cassatt's black and tan Griffon bitch was the mother of the dog in Mérite’s painting. Interestingly Manet, Monet, Renoir, Cassatt, Lepic, Eerelman, Merite, Degas, Lautrec and many other lesser known artists loved and owned Griffons from the period of 1874-1915 during the breeds heyday. {We acknowledge this information to Jeff Bazell}
