A watercolour on paper of a head study of a Cairn Terrier by Gourlay Steell RSA (Scottish, 1819-1894). Signed bottom left “G Steell 1881”. Gourlay Steell was Animal Painter to the Queen for Scotland from 1874, and there are several drawings in the Royal Collection of the Queen’s dogs. Scottish 1881.


Gourlay Steell famously painted “Speoch” the favourite Cairn Terrier of the 5th Duke of Buccleuch in 1864, now in “The Buccleuch Collection”.

Gourlay Steell was Animal Painter to the Queen for Scotland from 1874, and there are several drawings in the Royal Collection of the Queen’s dogs. Scottish 1881.
