Pen and ink drawing of ‘The Exhibition of Hayter's picture of The Trial of Queen Caroline’ by Sir Edwin Landseer R.A. (English, 1802-1873)

A pen and ink drawing of ‘The Exhibition of Hayter's picture of The Trial of Queen Caroline’ by Sir Edwin Landseer R.A. (English, 1802-1873). The 'trial' of Queen Caroline in 1820 was not technically a trial but a parliamentary debate on a bill designed to grant the King a divorce. Sir George Hayter (1792 – 1871) was a notable English painter, specialising in portraits. Landseer had known George and his brother John since childhood and both contributed major historical paintings to the Duke of Bedford’s gallery at Woburn Abbey. Today Sir George’s painting can be seen in the National Portrait Gallery.
