The work is in the manner of Jules I Chardigny (France, 1842-1892). “Le Peintre et L’Animal en France au XIXᵉ Si è cle†by Elisabeth Hardouin-Fugier, illustrates a similar dog holding a copy of “La Republic†and the dog is named “Brutusâ€.
