Oil of Bulldog puppies by Federico Olaria Torres (Spanish, 1848–1898) An oil on canvas of two Bulldog puppies in a straw filled box bearing the labels “FRAGILE†and “Valencia to PARISâ€, by Federico Olaria Torres (Spanish, 1848–1898). On the 28th September 1889, the ‘El Mercantil Valenciano’, a Spanish Newspaper makes a special reference to this painting when on display at the Valencian gallery of Mr Mendoza, “the canvas represented a box, on the exterior of which the word Frágile was read, and in whose bottom appeared two dogsâ€.
He exhibited at many prestigious shows, including, the Bellas Artes de Valencia in Spain, then Switzerland, London and at the Paris Salon des Artistes Français, from 1895 to 1897. One of those exhibits was a puppy group, titled “Les Chiotsâ€. The subject was a favourite of the artist.
