A 19th century bronze and ormolu, French, Mastiff / Dogue de Bordeaux / Bordeaux Mastiff "chenet" fireplace fender A pair 19th century, Epoque Louis Philippe, bronze and ormolu French chenet fireplace fender. Each end is mounted with a finely cast recumbent Mastiff / Dogue de Bordeaux / Bordeaux Mastiff / French Mastiff. French, circa 1840. The dogs are sculptured in the manner of "Ludwig," a Bullmastiff after a work by Elizabet Ney (Munster, Germany, 1833 - Austin, Texas, 1907). Her dog “Ludwig” was reportedly named after the Bavarian King Ludwig II (1845-1886) who was the subject of Ney's marble sculpture in 1868. The sculptor Jim (James) Frank Ward (Texas, 1931-2012) was commissioned to sculpture a limited edition of 12 bronzes. The Elizabet Ney Museum, Austin, Texas, is in possession of one such "Ludwig" bronze marked 8/ 12.
