Yorkshire Terrier " Terrier du Yorkshire" by Louis-Eugène Lambert (French, 1825-1900) Oil on canvas of a recumbent Yorkshire Terrier, "Terrier du Yorkshire". Signed bottom right "L. Eug Lambert". A sketch of this same dog titled "Terrier du Yorkshire" is illustrated in “Les Chiens et Les Chats d'Eugene Lambert" by G. de Cherville published Librairie de l'Art, 1888. French, circa 1885. Further it is historically important being an early image of the breed. The name Yorkshire Terrier was not recognised by the Kennel Club until 1874. Then it is generally said that the breed was not developed until the 1880’s. The breed was next recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1885, and tth English Yorkshire Terrier Club was formed in 1898. So, in 1885, when painted, this French owned pampered Yorkshire would have been very special and elite.
