An oil on canvas of the head of Mrs Winifred M Charlesworth’s Golden Retriever "Noranby Campfire” by Miss Elizabeth Marion Nelson. Titled bottom right "Noranby Campfire”, And signed and dated bottom left “EM Nelson1915”. English, 1915.

Mrs Winifred M Charlesworth’s "Noranby Campfire”

Noranby Campfire (KCSB 126 T) was born 24th July 1912 out of Culham Cooper x Normandy Beauty, and was owed and breed by Mrs. Winifred M. Charlesworth.

Noranby Campfire became historic in the annuals of the breed being the first ‘Golden Champion’. During the War Campfire was hardly shown at all. In 1921 Campfire obtained a Certificate of Merit in field trials

Campfire sired 5 c.c in Noranby Corncrake, Crash, Curfew, Judith and Geranium of Soham. The female descent from Campfire also achieved much champion success with the likes of Ch Noranby Diana, Ch Heydown Grip, Ch Noranby Dutiful and Ch Noranby Deirdre

Mrs Charlesworth had at least 6 champions, and the distinction of breeding 8 champions, namely Ch Noranby Campfire, Jeptha, Dutiful, Deirdre, Daydawn, destiny, Vic, and Banner of Woolley

Then with Noranby Dandelion, Campfire sired such famous dogs as Noranby Daybreak, Crash, Binks Rufus, Dazzle and Sergeant of Kentford

Mrs Charlesworth’s Noranby Kennels made a historic and inestimable contribution for some 40 years to the supremacy in the rise and development of the Goldens both on both bench and in the field.

Nornaby Beauty is said to be the rock on which the kennel was built, and Campfire’s contribution is without question.

Further, it was largely through the efforts of this noted breeder, Mrs Winifred M Charlesworth, that the Golden Retriever Club was found in 1911, when she became secretary. Importantly, she was further instrumental in ensuring that dogs breed were dual purpose and not just for the bench.

Published in 192 Mrs Charlesworth wrote the chapter on the breed for Hutchinson's Dog Encyclopedia”.

“Mrs. Charlesworth’s Noranby goldens were among the three foundational lines that make up the modern golden’s pedigree. Noranby Campfire was the first stud she bred. His type is of a lithe, dark-colored dog with a somewhat wavy-coat, very typical of Mrs. Charlesworth’s breeding, although most of her later dogs had straighter coats.

Her line was founded with a bitch named “Normanby Beauty.” The name was originally “Normanby,” but a snafu at a dog show changed the name to “Noranby.”

Beauty was bred to Lord Harcourt’s “Culham Copper.” This breeding produced the foundation stud, Noranby Campfire. Copper’s sire was Culham Brass, and this line, the Culhams, is well-documented in terms of pedigree and photos. This line is originally came directly from Guisachan’s kennels.”

“If I hadn’t been for the efforts of Winifred Charlesworth, it is likely that the golden retriever would have remained a minority color variant of the flat-coated retriever. Not only did she write the first proposed standard for the breed in 1910, but she also developed one of the three founding strains of the breed. Her Noranby dogs were part of the bedrock on which this breed is based.”
