19th century French cast iron boar vases by Christophe Francois Calla (French, 1802-1884) after Claude Ballin (Paris 1615-1678) A pair of 19th century French cast iron boar vases by Christophe Francois Calla (French, 1802-1884) after Claude Ballin (Paris 1615-1678), Louis XIV’S goldsmith. The handles cast with Janus heads and boars' masks, the sides with shells, Greek key and oak leaf decoration, on waisted fluted stems and square platform bases. All original Claude Ballin examples are now lost except for a bronze version from 1665 in the collection of the Château de Versailles, inventory number MR 3415.
Copies were made for the fourth Earl of Marquis of Hertford (1800-1867) for his Paris house, Bagatelle in the Parc du Bologne.
