An oil on panel anthropomorphic hopeful Maltese seated at the table before an empty plate and wine glass by Charles van der Eycken (Belgian, 1809-1891).
Signed bottom left “Ch van der Eycken”. Belgium, circa 1873.
Eycken was known for his anthropomorphic, conversational and performing dog paintings with such titles as “The Musicians”, “Before the Performance” “The Interval” and “Circus Dogs”.
Van den Eycken was known for his anthropomorphic conversational dog paintings. From 1881 he exhibited regularly in the Salons of Brussels, Liège, Ghent and Antwerp, as well as in the Netherlands, Germany and Spain. He painted several pictures for Queen Marie-Henriette of Belgium.
