Rowing on the Thames circa 1890 Rowing on the Thames by Prince Paul (Pierre) Trobetzkoy (1866-1938)
The Oxford 'Bumps' race Both Oxford and Cambridge have many College crews (Exeter, Magdalen, Trinity, Jesus, Christ Church, Pembroke, Caius, etc). The Bumps races are between the colleges crews. Oxford has their races (your picture) and Cambridge has their races. A University Eight is selected from the College Eights to represent each University in the Oxford Cambridge Boat Race (established in 1829). The picture scene shows the college barges (boathouses) and rafts/punt on the left with the University boathouse across the river. These floating barges served as college clubhouses with changing rooms, lounges, observation deck, boat storage and launching raft. The flags flying on race day would represent the college colors. |
