Foxhound by Sir Edwin Henry Landseer RA (British, 1802-1873) Oil on millboard of a hound by Sir Edwin Henry Landseer (English, 1802-1873). To the reverse inscribed in ink:
“SKETCHED BY SIR EDWIN LANDSEER WHEN ON A VISIT TO H.WELLS AT HOLME WOOD.
GIVEN TO H.W. BUTLER, WHO GAVE IT TO J HOWARD OF HOLME ? THE LATTER HANDED IT TO W D STOREY FOR SERVICES RENDEREDâ€
This would seem to be William Wells (1818 - 1889). The Wells Family made their fortune in shipbuilding back in the 16th century, and even get a mention in Samuel Pepys's Diary. William Wells inherited the Holme estate including Holmewood Hall. He died childless in 1889. Holmewood Hall and its 6,000 acre estate were bought for ?72,000 by neighbouring landowner Lord de Ramsey.
And in a different hand: “Elsie ?? London Dec 1951â€
English, 1824
