The Yarmouth Mail stationery at the Tree Cups, Colchester by James Pollard (English, 1792–1867) The Yarmouth Royal Mail “Woodbridge Yoxford†coach with seven up parked at the “Three Cups Hotel†Colchester, outside the offices of “The Old Blue Coach Office†and “Star Coach Office†beneath a full moon evening, by James Pollard (English, 1792-1867).
The coach fully laden, wears the correct Royal Mail livery, black with red door and lower panels, Post Office red wheels, and The Royal Coat of Arms on the door with the town name “Woodbridge†and “Yoxford†signifying the coach’s route.
The reverse bears the gallery label of “Arthur Ackermann & Sons Ltd 3 Old Bond Street, London W1 Established 1783â€. Signed and dated middle bottom “J Pollard 1831â€. English, circa 1831.
An historic oil, the “Three Cups Hotelâ€, Colchester stood on the north side of the High Street from 1701 until its demolition in 1972, having been rebuilt in 1886. Pigot's directory stated that the Royal Mail coach left the Cups every night at 12.15 for London. This would seem to be about the time of night Pollard recorded the coach.
