The 'trial' of Queen Caroline in 1820 was not technically a trial but a parliamentary debate on a bill designed to grant the King a divorce. Sir George Hayter (1792 – 1871) was a notable English painter, specialising in portraits. Landseer had known George and his brother John since childhood and both contributed major historical paintings to the Duke of Bedford’s gallery at Woburn Abbey. Today Sir George’s painting can be seen in the National Portrait Gallery. The reverse bears Thomas Agnew label, and stock number 46758., together with auction / exhibition catalogue number “188 Sir Edwin Landseer R.A.
