A Belgium artist who pupiled at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts - École supérieure des Arts de la Ville de Bruxelles, whose work in this painting bears a resemblance to Frederick Thomas Daws (1878-1949)

In pencil, titled bottom left "The Black Watch” and signed bottom right "Marguerite Kirmse". Interestingly not titled in the margin “The Black Watch” as was the artist’s usual practice, suggesting an artist’s proof. Torn label to the reverse bears “190 E. Colorado St, Pasadena” American, 1922.

Indistinctly monogramed “MH”. The reverse bears scarcely decipherable pencil inscription “Mrs Woods 3472 ½ girl Gland Haig”. A framer’s label reads “FREDDIE SCHNEIDER PICTURE FRAMES 1338 3RD AVENUE (Between 76th & 77th Streets) NEW YORK , N.Y. 10021 LE 5 – 0160”
