Flatcoat Retriever holding a Ptarmigan oliograph for Buchanan’s Black and White Whisky after Maud Earl (English, 1864-1943) An oliograph showing a Flatcoat Retriever holding a Ptarmigan. The image was famously published in Buchanan's Black & White Scotch Whisky advertisements in 1922 / 1923, after Maud Earl (English, 1864-1943).
Before Buchanan’s decided on the Scottish Terrier and West Highland Terrier (Scottie and Westie) as branding for their whisky, they used all sorts of different dogs to promote their product, often commissioning paintings from the top animal painters of the day, such as here with Maud Earl. Those by Maud Earl included three Yorkshire Terriers, English Pointer, four West Highland Terriers, Scottish Terrier, three Bull Terriers and puppies in a basket.
This is rare being complete in Buchanan's original black frame inscribed, top “Black & White†then bottom “Scotch Whiskyâ€.

A porcelain Greyhound and hare by Jacob Petit (French, 1796-1865) A porcelain standing Greyhound with a hare between its legs by Jacob Petit (French, 1796-1865). Signed on the base “JPâ€.
Jacob Petit (French, 1796-1865) was one of the most famous French porcelain manufacturers of the 19th century. He began studying painting at Gros, then left Paris for England which gave him the taste for decorative objects. On his return to France in 1830, he published a book of interior decoration. His greatest interest was though in porcelain. By 1838 he bought Weill Baruch, in Fontainebleau. In 1850, he merged his two factories in Avon, but some years later, in 1862, he retires from Paradise Street Poissonière, transferring its business to one of his workers, Jacquemain.

Aquatint etching of Labrador Retriever Dual “Ch. Bramshaw Bob†retrieving a Mallard by Reuben Ward Binks (1880 - 1950) Aquatint etching of the Labrador Retriever Dual “Ch. Bramshaw Bob†retrieving a Mallard by Reuben Ward Binks (1880 - 1950). Titled in pencil bottom left “English Setter†and signed in pencil bottom right "Ward Binks pinxt sculpt". It is unclear why Binks signed this “pinxt sculptâ€, but it makes this copy a rare hand touched artist proof.
In the 1920s and 1930s, regardless of the field and show bench, it was the exclusive place of Countess Howe's Banchory Kennels. One such dog was Dual Ch. Bramshaw Bob, whose sire was Ch. Ingleston Ben and dam Bramshaw Brimble. Bramshaw Bob was very successful wining 27 CC and was first at Crufts in both 1932 and 1933.
Ward Binks aquatint etchings were published Arthur A Greatorex, 14 Grafton St., Bond St., London. English, circa 1935.
A image of Dual Ch Bramshaw Bob together with Ch Banchory Trueman and Ch Igleston Ben by Reuben Ward Binks is illustrated in “The Popular Labrador Retriever†by Countess Lorna Howe. Then in the same book a similar composition of Dual Ch Banchory Bolo by Binks is illustrated.
