In pencil, titled bottom left "We" and signed bottom right "Marguerite Kirmse". The image, further appeared in "Dogs" by the artist, with an introduction by R. T Townsend published in 1930, by the Derrydale Press. Here Kirmse writes "How we used to sit hour after hour watching the lazy gulls and listening to the rolling waves. One of these was my favourite of all dogs; she died this year I made this etching."

I watched them for a long time and each time the little fellow below almost gained the third step, the one above seemed to have supreme satisfaction in pushing him down again."

Here Kirmse writes "This etching was hard to title because I did not want to give the impression of finality to the parting; for that reason the title "Left Behind" was rejected. I like to believe that the parting is only temporary and that the owner will return before long."
